THE ONLY WAY TO SAFE HIS LIFE - A LIVER TRANSPLANT!
Dear all,
My brother, Tim Chan Tin-Sung, 23 year old, was diagnosed with Erythropoietic Protoprophyria (EPP) at the age of 20. It is a rare genetic disease characterized by photosensitivity. As a child, whenever he got home after an outing, his face, ears and hands swelled up. He had a burning pain all over his body, too. When my parents took him to the family doctors, they all said he was allergic to the soil or pollen. In September 2006, after he had a severe reaction and abdominal pain, he stayed in the hospital for 4 months and he was finally diagnosed with EPP.
EPP is due to an inherited deficiency of the enzyme ferrochelatase. Reduced activity of this enzyme causes a build-up of porphyrins accumulating in the liver. Large amounts of toxic porphyrins has caused rapid deterioration of his liver function leading to liver failure; which my brother has.
Tim has not been feeling well since November 2006. He lost his appetite and had severe abdominal pain and diarrhea. His mobility was gradually decreasing so that he had to stop his study. By the end of March this year his condition got worse. We went to Queen Mary Hospital on March 26 and he has been in the hospital now for one month. He is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital and is waiting for a hope for liver transplantation. His liver no longer functions. Aside from his severe liver failure, he has acquired pneumonia since a week after being in the hospital. His lungs are very weak now and breathing is assisted by an ventilator.
The underlying cause of my brother's disease is related to the bone marrow. A hematopoietic stem cell transplant (a bone marrow transplant) is necessarily to be done shortly after his liver transplantation. Liver transplant is of the utmost importance for now. As a family, we all are willing to do the live donation for him but unfortunately none of our livers is a proper match. Tim is in desperate need of a liver transplant! If you are willing to help this 23-year-old young man and donate part of your liver to him, please contact us at savingtim@gmail.com. Your decision could save the life of this young man and let him live with his family!
